Whenever people see photos like this of Jim Henson and the rest of the crew responsible for bringing the Muppets to life, the most common response, as far as I’ve seen anyway, is of disillusionment - as if some magic has been lost. Overdramatic wails of allegedly ruined childhoods are flung left and right.

Personally, I think this only makes me think of the Muppets, and the people behind them, with an even stronger sense of fondness and admiration.

This was a group of fully grown people using all of their skill, creativity, and resourcefulness simply to make people smile.

The Jim Henson Company turned it into a science. And that’s wonderful.

also if you’ve ever seen a puppeteer in real life, you already know this but - the magic doesn’t leave just because you can see the puppeteer.  A good puppeteer manages to bring life to the puppet no matter what the circumstance, and you’ll still find yourself talking to the puppet as if it’s real, even if you can see the puppeteer speaking and moving it.  that’s the real magic of puppetry.
